Sri Lanka: Breakthrough at UN Human Rights Council

Australian Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon in welcoming the UN Human Rights Council resolution on Sri Lanka said that it is a long awaited first step by the international community to hold the Sri Lankan Government to account for the war crimes committed during the civil war.

"The passing of this resolution is a sign that the international community is not willing to be hoodwinked by the Government of Sri Lanka,” Senator Rhiannon said.

Greens secure unanimous support for action on Sri Lanka at UN

The Australian Greens today secured support for a motion urging the Federal government to come out in support a US motion before the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) this week calling on the Sri Lankan government to initiate credible and independent actions into war crimes.

The motion, moved by Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon, Foreign Minister Bob Carr and Senator Gary Humphries, is below. A vote is expected on the US-sponsored resolution at the UNHRC this Friday.

Greens congratulate Tamil youth on action at One Day International

Greens Senator for NSW Lee Rhiannon has congratulated Tamil youth activists for their action "Whose side are you on?" at the One Day International match between Sri Lanka and Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground today.

This action by more than 130 Tamil youth is an important part of the growing global campaign for an independent investigation into alleged war crimes committed in Sri Lanka during the civil war.
