Richmond RAAF Base toxic contamination - Defence must not repeat Williamtown mistakes

Following the release of the Defence Department report into toxic contamination coming off the Richmond RAAF Base, The Greens have called on the Federal Government to commit to an immediate clean up to protect the Hawkesbury River and the reputation of the Hawkesbury’s agriculture and river-based lifestyle.

The report found a 10 square kilometre plume of chemical contamination in groundwater surrounding the RAAF Base, contaminating Rickaby's Creek and Baker's Lagoon, with probable discharges into the Hawkesbury River.

PFAS contamination

Senator RHIANNON: I'd like to go back to your work on the PFAS contamination.

CHAIR: We're going back to PFAS? That's fine. Can I interrupt there for a second. We have got confirmation that the TGA are no longer required, so they are released, along with those in program 5.1 who are not needed for a later outcome. Sorry, Senator Rhiannon, I just wanted to let people go home when they can.

Greens call for transparency around firefighting foams

The Greens have again criticised the Department of Defence for their ongoing use of firefighting foams containing PFAS in Darwin and Townsville. 
 
Today they called on the Department of Defence and Air Services Australia to release the Material Safety Data Sheets of all the firefighting foams that they are currently using.
 
Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon said. “There are no good arguments for the continued use of firefighting foams containing PFOS, PFOA or PFHxS,” Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon said.
