Motion: Support for Local Rail Industry

Senator RHIANNON (New South Wales) (15:58): I, and also on behalf of Senator Carr, move:

That the Senate—

(a) notes that:

(i) the New South Wales (NSW) Government has awarded $4 billion in contracts to build the Intercity and Waratah train fleets overseas, and

(ii) this decision by the NSW government will impact local rail manufacturers and supply chain businesses, and puts up to 15,000 existing jobs across Australia at risk; and

So Treasurer Scott Morrison and Finance Minister Mathias Cormann look at Bill Shorten and see Jeremy Corbyn or Bernie Sanders, who are accused of being "socialist revisionists" and "the new romantics of protectionism". If only.

Bill Shorten is a milksop compared to Jeremy Corbyn. More on that in a moment.

Meanwhile, the Coalition's economic gurus claim the policies of the Liberal-National parties are "common sense" and not driven by ideology.

Meat processing industry job losses – govt must help locals find secure work

The Australian Greens extend their condolences to the staff and their families affected by the closure of Manildra Meat Company in Cootamundra. The Greens are calling on state and federal governments to work with the community to find secure jobs for these workers. 

150 permanent staff and 70 casual staff at the company will lose their jobs. Today will be the final day of processing. 

Greens industry spokesperson NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon said, “This is another blow for NSW and the Riverina and our thoughts are with all of these workers and their families.
