Parramatta Girls Home fire should spark national heritage listing: Greens

Greens Senator for NSW Lee Rhiannon says a recent fire destroying a wing of the 1840s Roman Catholic Orphanage should act as new impetus for Federal Heritage Minister Mr Tony Burke to fast track national heritage listing of the Parramatta Female Factory Precinct.

"This sad event shows how this unique collection of buildings remains vulnerable to fire, vandalism and profit hungry developers while both federal and NSW governments stand idly by," Senator Rhiannon said.

Greens Senator for NSW Lee Rhiannon expressed disappointment that the Minister for Heritage is delaying work on achieving heritage listing of the Parramatta Female Factory Precinct until the first quarter of 2013, following a meeting with Minister Burke in Canberra last week.

A Greens motion calling for the national heritage listing of the Parramatta Female Factory Precinct, Australia's oldest existing female convict establishment passed the Senate in mid October.

A Greens motion calling for the national heritage nomination for listing of the Parramatta Female Factory Precinct, Australia's oldest existing female convict establishment, has passed the Senate. Meanwhile the NSW government is developing a master plan for the heritage precinct which paves the way for opening it up to commercial and residential development, says Greens Senator for NSW Lee Rhiannon.
