Adjournment Speech: Palestine

Senator RHIANNON (New South Wales) (21:21): I recently returned from a self-funded fact finding trip to Palestine. As well as visiting Australian aid projects in the West Bank, I met with organisations and Palestinians living inside the 1948 borders of Israel. This was a very informative visit. I do thank Union Aid Abroad and EuroPal for their assistance.

World Vision Gaza allegations

Greens overseas aid spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon has called for the DFAT inquiry into allegations that World Vision's Gaza branch director Mohammad El Halabi diverted tens of millions of dollars to the military wing of Hamas to be quickly resolved to ensure the people of Gaza are not denied urgent humanitarian aid.

"It is vital that the allegations are speedily resolved to ensure there is no disruption of humanitarian aid going into Gaza," Senator Rhiannon said.

Support Gaza's Ark

I extend my support to Gaza's Ark following the recent bombing of their boat. This has been identified as a terrorist attack by Knesset member Haneen Zoabi. I support Mrs Zoabi's call for a thorough investigation.

With an international and Palestinian crew Gaza's Ark was due to sail out of Gaza with a cargo of Palestinian products to fulfil trade deals with international buyers. This peaceful action is challenging the illegal and inhuman Israeli blockade.
