MP expense reform needs muscle – penalties essential

The public will remain sceptical about the Turnbull government’s latest attempt to clean up MPs’ expenses if the measures do not include clear compliance and penalty provisions, Greens democracy spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said. 
 
Senator Rhiannon was commenting on the Parliamentary Business Resources Bill 2017 to be introduced this week by the Special Minister of State Senator Scott Ryan.

Life Gold Pass going, but the perk continues for former PMs

Greens spokesperson for democracy Senator Lee Rhiannon has welcomed reports that Prime Minister Turnbull will finally scrap the Life Gold Pass scheme. 
 
However, the Greens say the scheme should not be retained for former Prime Ministers, who already collect significant parliamentary pensions after retirement.
 
“Why scrap the Life Gold Pass scheme but retain it for former Prime Ministers, who collect hundreds of thousands of dollars each year in the form of parliamentary pensions?” Senator Rhiannon said.

Ley’s expenses scandal – more evidence of why we need a national ICAC

The latest MP expenses scandal involving Health Minister Sussan Ley further strengthens the case for both a National Anti-Corruption Commission and a major overhaul of the use of MP allowances, Greens democracy spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said.  

“This scandal will not be the last involving an MP abusing public money.  It should be a wakeup call for the Turnbull government,” Senator Rhiannon said.

The elitist Life Gold Pass is set to survive into 2017 as Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, like former PM Tony Abbott, has squibbed previous promises to ditch the discredited scheme, Greens democracy spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said. 
 
“Prime Minister Turnbull’s excuse that his government is too ‘busy’ is rubbish. We all know three weeks ago the Senate ran out of legislation 
to debate,” Senator Rhiannon said.
 
“Just last month Special Minister of State Scott Ryan said the bill would be introduced before Christmas.

Call for AFP investigation - Turnbull must act on Hockey hire car habits

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has been urged to support an investigation by the Australian Federal Police into reports that former Treasurer Joe Hockey’s Cabcharge account has been misused. 

Greens democracy spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said, “Considering how the former Treasurer and his colleagues quickly referred the former speaker Mr Peter Slipper to the AFP the same rules should apply in this latest scandal.
