Senate supports national homelessness action plan

Today the Senate has supported a Greens/ALP motion calling on the government to implement a national homelessness action plan, and supporting the launch of the Everybody’s Home campaign.

A useless housing budget

The number of people who are homeless and the number struggling to buy their first home will increase under the Liberal-National budget, Greens housing spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said. 
“The Turnbull government has only offered superficial solutions to the housing crisis. There are fourteen supposed housing affordability measures in this budget, but none of them will do much to make housing more affordable. 
“Any housing plan that does not reform negative gearing and the capital gains discount is a sham.

Labor has damaged their credibility and raised doubts about their response to the housing crisis by running a scare campaign about the impact “foreigners” are having on housing prices, the Greens housing spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said today.

“It’s disappointing that Labor have continued the xenophobic tactics of the Turnbull government by scapegoating ‘foreigners’ in their housing announcement today,” Senator Rhiannon said.

The Australian Greens have slammed the Turnbull government’s latest proposal on housing – pushing migrants out of Sydney. 

Greens spokesperson for housing Senator Lee Rhiannon said, “Today the Turnbull government is desperately trying to distract from their own failures on housing policy with some shameless dog whistling. 

“They are doubling down on their attacks against migrant communities to build a false narrative about what is driving the housing crisis.
