Greens stand up for women, while old parties duck for cover on Madigan’s abortion bill

Labor and Coalition MPs have failed to stand up for women in a Senate Committee response to Senator John Madigan’s sex-selection abortion bill, designed to limit sexual reproductive rights.

Senator Madigan’s bill removes Medicare funding for abortions procured on the basis of selecting the gender of the child.

Senator RHIANNON (New South Wales) (17:12): The Health Insurance Amendment (Medicare Funding for Certain Types of Abortion) Bill, moved by Democratic Labor Party Senator John Madigan, is not about sex selection abortion. The Greens share concerns about sex selection abortion where it occurs. However, there is no evidence abortions procured on the basis of selecting the gender of the child are occurring in Australia or that Medicare is being used to fund such procedures.

Comment: If you are looking for a reason to reform Australia’s superannuation system women’s rights would be the stand out. The tax subsidises that underpin our superannuation remain highly inequitable. This form of welfare for the rich clearly disadvantages women.

Madigan pushes misleading gender-selection abortion motion

The old parties joined forces today to pass a misleading Senate motion pushed by Senator John Madigan against gender-selective abortion. The Australian Greens opposed the motion.

"The Australian Greens condemn sex-selective abortion where it does occur and we stand squarely behind the recommendations from the UN Conferences at Cairo and Beijing but we will not support a motion that is more about pushing Senator Madigan's anti-abortion barrow than addressing women's inequality", said Greens womens spokesperson Lee Rhiannon.

Debbie Gibson, Assistant Secretary of the Greens NSW, gave the speech about the life of Juanita Nielsen at the 2012 Juanita Nielsen Memorial Lecture.

Juanita Neilsen disappeared on July 4th, 1975. It is widely believed that she was murdered but her body has never been found and those responsible have never been brought to justice.

Who was she and why do we have this memorial lecture series in her name? In what way is her story relevant to today?
