Women and super: Greens call for reform to address inequity

Ensuring women have sufficient superannuation to last them in retirement demands that the government address policy settings around superannuation that negatively impact upon women, says Greens Senator and women's spokesperson Lee Rhiannon ("Money crunch forces women back to work", Sydney Morning Herald today).

"A plan to address the gender gap in retirement income is something the Federal Minister for the Status of Women Julie Collins should put at the top of her 'to do' list," Senator Rhiannon said.

Quarantine foreign aid budget from razor gang cuts: Greens

Greens NSW Senator and overseas aid spokesperson Lee Rhiannon today called on the federal government to rule out any watering down of the Labor government's clear commitment to increase the aid budget.

"If the federal government drops the ball on its commitment to increase foreign aid it will be a setback for poverty alleviation programs and will go down as another Labor broken promise," Senator Rhiannon said.

"Cutting the aid program is small-minded and mean and would further damage Labor's public standing.

Protecting citrus growers – and lovers of fresh oranges – from dumped fruit

The Australian Greens are today writing to Trade Minister Craig Emerson asking for an immediate investigation into whether oranges are being dumped into the Australian market at below cost, making it impossible for Australian growers to compete.

“Dumping is bad for growers, bad for jobs and bad for consumers in the long run, and Minister Emerson should immediately investigate if it is going on with $10 boxes of Egyptian oranges being sold in Sydney,” Australian Greens Deputy Leader, Senator Christine Milne, said.

Tough times for NSW under Coalition razor gang cuts

Responding to the leaked Coalition report that the opposition razor gang is looking for $70 billion in budget cuts Greens Senator for NSW Lee Rhiannon has said she is concerned an Abbott led government would make life tougher for people living in NSW. (The Australian today).

"Public services across NSW will suffer if the Liberals and Nationals form government at the next election,” Senator Rhiannon said.

“The hardship will be considerable as the Coalition parties will target public services, like health and education.
