National pro-Adler vote latest example of Coalition white anting gun control

The failure of National Senators to oppose the introduction of the rapid fire Adler firearm is further evidence that the Coalition is weakening the legacy of former Prime Minister John Howard, Greens gun control spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said. 
 
“Today Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull should get gun control back on track by publicly stating that his government will oppose the gun lobby’s push to allow more dangerous weapons into Australia,” Senator Rhiannon said.

Coalition Government hand in hand with the gun lobby to tear down the National Firearms Agreement

In a rare insight into the gun lobby’s shopping list, minutes from meetings between the Federal Justice Minister and a secretive “firearms industry reference group” show the Coalition Government working with the gun lobby to tear down the National Firearms Agreement.  
 
The gun lobby’s wish list includes importing more and more lethal firearms, increasing children’s access to weapons and removing current limits on firearms ownership.

Leyonhjelm’s horse trading on ABCC reveals his craven opportunism

Greens spokesperson for gun control Senator Lee Rhiannon has commented on reports that Senator Leyonhjelm is seeking to pressure the Turnbull government into relaxing national gun laws, in exchange for his support of the ABCC. 
 
‘There should not be horse trading on these bills. It is so important that we do not let our stringent gun laws slip away by bartering over bills like this.
 
‘The ABCC is a piece of anti-worker legislation. It has nothing to do with cracking down on corruption, it is about union busting.

Labor back Liberal/Nationals to vote down Greens motion on gun control

The Senate has voted down a motion put by Greens spokesperson for gun control Senator Lee Rhiannon. 

Senator Rhiannon said, “The recently announced gun amnesty is welcome news and it was disappointing that the Coalition and Labor did not demonstrate their commitment to gun law reform by voting in favour of this motion. 

“The Greens want to strengthen and maintain the National Firearms Agreement, so that all semi-auto handguns and dangerous rapid fire guns like the Adler shotgun are banned.

(a) notes that: 

   (i) a video in circulation violently threatens a high-profile gun control advocate, 

   (ii) the individuals in the video have previously been referred to the New South Wales Police for posting violent videos aimed at racial and religious minorities and the Greens, and 

   (iii) former Prime Minister John Howard performed a courageous act in 1996 by pursuing national gun law reform; and

Australian Greens portfolio reshuffle: Senator Rhiannon picks up Housing, Industry and Gun Control

Portfolio allocations for the Greens parliamentary team was announced today. 

Senator Rhiannon has taken on three new portfolios: Housing, Industry and Gun Control. She will retain her portfolios of Democracy, Local Government and Animal Welfare.

“Australia faces tremendous challenges, with the provision of housing affordability one of the most critical if we are to reduce inequality. I look forward to picking up on the leading work of Senator Scott Ludlam in this area,” said Senator Rhiannon.
