Senator RHIANNON (New South Wales) (00:24): On another matter, when I visited Alice Springs earlier this year I witnessed apartheid. The first time was outside a local bottle shop. I was with colleagues from the Alice Springs Greens; we were walking across town to the venue for our evening event. As we cut through a shopping centre we saw the Northern Territory apartheid laws in action: two men were stopped by police just as they came out of the shopping centre's bottle shop. I was with my colleague, Greens member and former federal candidate Barbara Shaw.

Federal Senate calls for action to stop ongoing Stolen Generations

The Australian Senate today passed a Greens' motion recognising that the ongoing rate of removal of Aboriginal children from their families in NSW risks creating another Stolen Generations.

Federal Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon said: "This is an important acknowledgment from the Australian Parliament that the Stolen Generations aren't just history, they continue to this day.

"As we get more detail of the extent of Aboriginal child removals there is an ever clearer case for urgent action to keep communities and families together.
