Will Carr’s foreign minister gig save crumbling edifice?

Citizen Bob Carr became Senator Bob Carr at 12.30 pm Monday and a few hours later the title jumped to Minister Bob Carr.

Probably because I was a member of the NSW parliament for six of the ten years that Mr Carr was premier a few people have asked me about Australia’s new Foreign Minister.

While Carr’s erudite way with words entertained many when he was premier his NSW legacy is looking increasingly threadbare.

Leadbeater possum left vulnerable by Vic Supreme Ct forest decision

Greens Senator and forests spokesperson Lee Rhiannon tonight congratulated Victorian forest campaigners for taking court action to stop VicForests logging the habitat of the endangered Leadbeater possum, but says the failure to halt logging permanently is further evidence that the Regional Forest Agreements process should be scrapped.

A decision in the case of MyEnvironment Inc v VicForests was handed down by the Victorian Supreme Court late this afternoon to prevent logging in the Gun Barrel, Freddo and South Col coupes of the Toolangi State Forest.

Springvale long wall coal mine extension an environmental blunder

Environment Minister Tony Burke's approval of the extension to the Springvale longwall mine, with its clear threats to the areas sandstone landscape and ecosystem, on the day the CSIRO's State of the Environment Report forecasts worsening global warming suggests a government blind to evidence of environmental damage caused by coal mining, says Greens Senator for NSW Lee Rhiannon.

"Minister Burke has thumbed his nose at evidence of the threats to this unique area from long wall mining," said Senator Rhiannon who is due to visit the site next week said.

Greens throw weight behind World Heritage push for Royal National Park

 Greens Senator for NSW Lee Rhiannon has signalled that the Australian Greens will stand squarely behind the growing campaign to give World Heritage listing to the Royal National Park and nearby Garawarra State Conservation Area and Heathcote National Park.

Laman St figs: Greens Leader Bob Brown congratulates activists

Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown and Greens Senator for NSW Lee Rhiannon have written an open letter to community campaigners working to save the Laman Street figs, congratulating them on their efforts and wishing them well in the ongoing case before the NSW Land and Environment Court.

"Maintaining a principled and effective campaign in such a tense and emotional environment deserves congratulation," Senator Rhiannon said.

"These figs inhabit the heart of Newcastle and many hearts of Newcastle residents.
