Greens spokesperson for animal welfare Senator Lee Rhiannon has commented on reports that the NSW ban on greyhounds is at risk of a constitutional challenge. Senator Rhiannon says that a national ban on greyhound racing is needed to secure the recent ban in NSW.
“The time for a nationwide ban on greyhound racing is now. Such a ban would nullify the effect of any constitutional challenge.
“NSW Premier Mike Baird must follow through with a ban on breeding and training for greyhound racing in NSW, and Prime Minister Turnbull must show some political courage and get behind a nationwide ban.
“Animal cruelty and abuse are systemic industry issues, and we cannot let this cruelty be exported across state borders or indeed overseas.
“We need to plan for the closure in a fair and organised way, to ensure that dogs are rehomed safely and that people are compensated for job losses.
