Time Prime Minister put his actions where his mouth is - ban corporate donations

Media Release
Lee Rhiannon 2 Apr 2014

Prime Minister Tony Abbott is being hypocritical over his complaint that Mr Clive Palmer is trying to buy seats in parliament, says Greens democracy spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon.

"The Coalition over many years has blocked electoral funding reform that would have capped election spending and stopped corporate political donations," Senator Rhiannon said

"Mr Abbott's Liberal Party accepts huge corporate donations, like the Palmer United Party, in their attempt to win seats in parliament.

"In the two years prior to the 2013 federal election the federal branches of the Liberal and National parties received at least $17 million in donations, with the bulk of it from the big end of town.

"Donations to the Coalition for the 2013 election will prove to be much higher as the information on the donations received in the two and half months before the election date are not yet known.

"If Mr Abbott fails to support caps on election spending and a ban on corporate donations to political parties and candidates it will be apparent that his intent is to keep big business money for the Liberal Party, not create a fair electoral funding system for all," Senator Rhiannon said.
