Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon will attend the action in Sydney in support of activists who have shut down all four of Whitehaven's open cut coal mines on the Liverpool Plains.
WHEN: 12pm TODAY 29 September
WHERE: Whitehaven Coal office, 259 George St, Sydney
Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon said:
"I congratulate the protesters who have shut down all four of Whitehaven's open cut coal mines on the Liverpool Plains.
"The 150 people involved in this direct action are the voice of a community that is fed up with the damage the coal industry is causing and the corrupt approval processes that have become endemic in NSW.
"The CSIRO's recent report on public attitudes to mining shows that these protesters are taking up widespread community concerns.
"More and more people know that the mining industry does not share its benefits, and that we cannot trust governments to hold the industry to account.
"Coal is a dying commodity. As the price continues to tumble, and China moves to clean up its power industry, it is only right that citizens question whether we should be destroying our environment for the sake of a selfish industry.
"If we cannot trust our governments to protect our environment, and to plan for our future, then people will take direct action and I congratulate them for their courage and foresight.
