Scrap Western Sydney Airport plan, fast track High Speed Rail

Media Release
Lee Rhiannon 13 Apr 2016

The Greens have called on the Turnbull government and Labor opposition to scrap plans for Western Sydney Airport and put all allocated resources into fast tracking High Speed Rail along the nation’s east coast.

Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon said, “High Speed Rail is the project Australia needs to address travel demands for rapid interstate travel while providing jobs growth and benefits to regional NSW.

“Plans for Western Sydney Airport must be scrapped. It is robbing funding and taking away government focus from HSR.

“It is time the Coalition and Labor dumped plans for the Western Sydney Airport and backed high speed rail.

“Western Sydney Airport is the wrong project in the wrong place. It is being pushed by the major parties as this project favours developers. Massive profits are set to be made around the proposed airport site.

“Meanwhile local residents will suffer from the 24 hour operations that will cause noise and air pollution to impact on public health.

Greens candidate for Macquarie Terry Morgan said, “High Speed Rail has enormous benefits. It outperforms plane travel as the most popular rapid transport between 300 and 1,000 kilometres. This is the way to cut aviation use out of Sydney by half, and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

“High speed rail will bring enormous benefits to our region and across NSW in terms of jobs growth and travel solutions.
