Greens Senator for NSW Lee Rhiannon has called on Santos, following its buy-out of Eastern Star Gas, to outline what environmental protections it will put in place if it plans to pursue the contentious Pilliga Coal Seam Gas project.
"On a recent visit to the area it was clear that community opposition to this project is extremely high," Senator Rhiannon said.
"Fears that the project will wreck the natural environment must be addressed by the new owners.
"Santos can do better than Eastern Star Gas in explaining how the mining project will meet environmental standards and project precious water resources and farming lands.
"Food security, water, forests and community health are too important to be sacrificed to the profits of mining companies," Senator Rhiannon said.
