MP false allowance claim - call for new Nationals deputy leader to repay public money

Media Release
Lee Rhiannon 18 Dec 2017

Senator McKenzie should be required to repay $2279.67 she falsely claimed to attend a shooting awards event, Greens democracy spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said.

“Special Minister of State and the Finance Minister Senator Mathias Cormann should immediately direct the Deputy Leader of the Nationals to repay the money in full,” Senator Rhiannon said.

“Senator McKenzie has broken the rules. She stated she could claim the money in her capacity as Chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Shooting. However, this is incorrect.

“The Independent Parliamentary Expenses Authority stipulates that MPs cannot claim costs associated with parliamentary friendship groups.

“Considering Senator McKenzie will become a Cabinet Minister in the pending reshuffle, Minister Cormann should give close attention to ensuring the thousands of dollars that Senator McKenzie has falsely claimed are immediately returned to the public purse.

“This parliamentary friends group was formed two years ago. The Sporting Shooters Association along with about 40 MPs attended the launch of the group.

“Since the rise of the Shooters Party MPs from both major parties regularly court the shooting industry,” Senator Rhiannon said.
