13 000 live export animals stuck in port – continuing cruelty inexcusable

Greens animal welfare spokesperson Lee Rhiannon said: "This is the fifth time a live export ship carrying Australian animals has broken down in the last two years. This continuing cruelty of live exports is inexcusable.

"Temperatures are set to reach 37 degrees tomorrow in Fremantle. Each day the ship is stranded, means another day of agony for the sheep and cattle stuck on that ship.

Corporate heavy weights put their self-interest first in attacks on trade unions

It's of little surprise that Australia's business heavy weights have joined the Liberal Party's political attack on trade unions, said Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon.

"Reports that big wigs at an elite corporate event, the KPMG Couta Boat Classic, condemned unions are to be expected," Senator Rhiannon said.

"Many corporate CEOs back the Turnbull-Abbott government attacks on unions in the hope that it will help them bring in bigger profits.

Tuesday in Newcastle - Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon to attend Williamtown contamination Senate Inquiry

The first hearing of the Senate Inquiry into the toxic contamination caused by firefighting foams at the Williamtown RAAF Base will be held tomorrow.

Over 100 submissions have been received.

Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon, who initiated this Inquiry, will be one of the Senators in attendance to question witnesses. She is available for comment.

Reports that the World Heritage status of the Blue Mountains National Park could be lost if the current plans for Badgerys Creek Airport flight paths proceed provides further proof that this project should be scrapped, Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon said. (SMH, http://tinyurl.com/pffslr2)

"The World Heritage listing and natural integrity of the Blue Mountains National Park should not be put at risk from noise pollution associated with Badgerys Creek Airport," Senator Rhiannon said.

The Coalition and Labor party have struck another blow against democracy by voting down a Greens motion calling for a ban on for-profit corporate political donations and for a federal corruption watchdog to be established.
