A summary of our housing work in 2017

It was a lean year for housing at the federal level so it’s good to see some movements in the states and territories, particularly in NSW with Greens MP Jenny Leong's work on state tenancy laws.

The federal government has continued to protect the interests of the property sector by failing to real levels of funding for homelessness services and social housing, and leaving unfair investor tax breaks in place. We expect no changes in MYEFO on Monday.

MP false allowance claim - call for new Nationals deputy leader to repay public money

Senator McKenzie should be required to repay $2279.67 she falsely claimed to attend a shooting awards event, Greens democracy spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said.

“Special Minister of State and the Finance Minister Senator Mathias Cormann should immediately direct the Deputy Leader of the Nationals to repay the money in full,” Senator Rhiannon said.

“Senator McKenzie has broken the rules. She stated she could claim the money in her capacity as Chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Shooting. However, this is incorrect.

Now Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has opened the door to a national anti-corruption body he should engage with the National Integrity Committee (NIC) set up last month to advise policy makers on the best model. 

Commenting on the Prime Minister’s policy shift the Greens democracy spokesperson, Senator Lee Rhiannon said, “The Prime Minister will undermine his own announcement that he is considering a national anti-corruption body if he continues to advocate for a model similar to the Victorian IBAC.

Senate puts deadline on Turnbull government’s response to Williamtown

The Senate has called on the Turnbull government to explain how it will address financial impacts from the Williamtown contamination scandal by 5 February, 2018.

Commenting on the Greens/ALP motion, Greens Senator for NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon said it was time to give residents some certainty.

“At Tuesday’s public meeting, residents pleaded for answers from Department of Defence officials,” said Senator Rhiannon.
