Labor's claim on aid lacks credibility

Please see comment from Australian Greens spokesperson for overseas aid Senator Lee Rhiannon about Labor's economic update.

Senator Rhiannon said: “Labor’s  claim that it will meet the target of 0.5 per cent of gross national income by 2017-18 lacks credibility, after today’s announcement to slash the aid budget by $879 million, and its numerous failures to meet previous promised targets.

“Australia has dealt another savage blow to the world’s poorest.

“Since 2012 Labor and the Coalition have backtracked on a bipartisan commitment to increase overseas aid to 0.5 per cent of GNI by 2015.

“Australia’s aid contribution is already well-behind many OECD countries, including the debt-laden conservative British government which this year met the target of spending 0.7 per cent of GNI on aid.

“As a wealthy nation, we need to be taking leadership, not shirking our responsibility and short-changing people that rely on Australian aid”, said Senator Rhiannon.
