Kirby and Goodall will be welcome assets for animal protection in Australia

Media Release
Lee Rhiannon 21 Jul 2011

Greens Senator for NSW and animal welfare spokesperson Lee Rhiannon congratulated former High Court judge Michael Kirby and animal advocate Jane Goodall following today's announcement that they have been appointed as patrons for animal protection organisation Voiceless.

Senator Rhiannon is the Greens spokesperson for animal welfare. The Greens are the only parliamentary party to have a dedicated animal welfare portfolio.

"I congratulate former High Court Judge Michael Kirby and animal advocate Jane Goodall on being appointed as patrons for Voiceless" said Senator Rhiannon.

"Michael Kirby has a long history of speaking out against animal cruelty and supporting the development of animal protection law in Australia.

"Animal protection is an area ripe for law reform as too many animals continue to be kept in inhumane conditions in Australia. Michael Kirby is a great asset for animal protection as one of Australia's great law reformers" Senator Rhiannon said.

Senator Rhiannon will speak on a Voiceless animal law panel on Monday 1 August at Sydney University Law School.
