International fur ban puts limit on kangaroo products
Greens animal welfare spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon has congratulated Humane Society US and its Italian-based animal welfare group LAV, for their work in achieving a permanent ban on the use of fur in Gucci fashion.
“The ban on the use of fur by an international label is particularly significant for Australia as it includes a ban on the use of kangaroo fur,” Senator Rhiannon said.
“This win for animals and animal groups is huge. It demonstrates again that no-one wants to be associated with the barbarity that is the fur trade.
“Obtaining kangaroo fur can involve bludgeoning joeys, and shooting both their mothers and protective male kangaroos.
“This ban by a world leading fashion house is a huge setback for the abhorrent commercial kangaroo fur and skin trade.
“I am sure that the ban California already has in place on the importation of kangaroo products including their skins and fur would have helped build momentum for this international ban.
“The banning of fur within the fashion industry is a welcome additional protection for our iconic kangaroo.
“The planet has entered its 6th mass extinction event. Australia holds the shameful record of the highest rate of mammal extinctions in the last 400 years reported anywhere in the world.
“In this context the Australian government is sanctioning industrial-scale commercial slaughter of kangaroos in the largest shooting of terrestrial wildlife on the planet.
“Increasingly questions are being asked about Australian governments and their swampy relationship to an industry that has no oversight. Thousands of wild kangaroo families are shot and their joeys bludgeoned every night on private properties away from transparency and accountability.
“The loss of species happens incrementally. There is increasing concern that we are already witnessing the early stages of loss as we know kangaroos are suffering increasing local extinctions across Australia.
“Announcement of this ban is most welcome and I congratulate HSUS and LAV on this important achievement,” Senator Rhiannon said.
