Greens condemn massive job cuts at La Trobe University

Media Release
Lee Rhiannon 28 Feb 2014

Australian Greens spokesperson for higher education, Senator Lee Rhiannon has condemned La Trobe University’s decision to sack 15% of its workforce.

“Staff at La Trobe are deservedly outraged at this decision by university management to forcibly make 350 workers redundant,” said Senator Rhiannon..

“These cuts will have a huge impact not only on the staff that are losing their jobs and their families, but also on university students.

“These staff cuts will lead to cuts to courses and a decline in the quality of education and services at La Trobe.

“Instead of supporting jobs, Tony Abbott is proposing to slash $900 million out of the higher education budget. These cuts will lead to even more job losses across the country.

“The Greens will stand alongside staff, the National Tertiary Education Union and students in opposing these cuts at La Trobe and Abbott’s cuts to university funding.”
