Greens call on government to respond to Meriton’s threat of evictions
6000 households in Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast face an uncertain future as a result of Harry Triguboff’s threat to not renew leases and to sell properties if changes are made to tenancy laws in favour of tenants, said Australian Greens housing spokesperson, Senator Lee Rhiannon.
“Mr Triguboff’s comments show how damaging it is to have rented housing dominated by for-profit and private investor interests,” Senator Rhiannon said.
“Today I have written to the Minister for Social Services to request that the government outline how it may offer certainty and assistance to these households if Mr Triguboff carries out his threat.
“One option we have asked the government to consider is purchasing these properties and turning them into public and community housing.
“This would offer those households more stability in terms of tenancy and rent prices. Tenancy laws should be reformed across the board to ensure more stability for all renting households in Australia.
“Mr Triguboff’s threat also highlights the need for the Greens’ policy for a national minimum standard for tenancy laws to strengthen protections for renters, including prohibiting ‘no-grounds’ evictions and regulating rent rises,” said Senator Rhiannon.

Greens - Mass Eviction Threats Must be Stopped
Greens NSW Housing Spokesperson Jenny Leong MP has committed to stand up for the one third of people in NSW who rent and work to put an end to mass eviction threats by billionaire developers like Harry Triguboff.
"People are already living with such fear and insecurity as a result of the current rental housing crisis - it's not just arrogant it's shockingly irresponsible for anyone to threaten mass evictions as Mr Triguboff has done."
"The fact that a threat like this could be legally carried out shows that billionaire developers like Triguboff have way too much power and control over people's homes, and by extension their lives.
"That's why I will be writing to parliamentary counsel to request they draft legislation to limit the control of greedy developers to hold people who rent and the government to ransom when it comes to protecting renters rights.
“With over a third of people in NSW living in rental homes, the government must reign in this investor driven housing insecurity.”
