Australian Greens spokesperson for democracy Senator Lee Rhiannon today called for a strengthening of the lobbyist code of conduct following revelations the coal seam gas industry has hired numerous former senior politicians.
"The fact that former senior Cabinet Ministers Greg Combet, Craig Emerson and Martin Ferguson, along with former Deputy Prime Ministers John Anderson and Mark Vaile, are now shills for the coal seam gas industry shows the explicit links between Labor, the Coalition and big mining," Senator Rhiannon said.
"The current regulations that govern political lobbying at a federal level are clearly deficient.
"There is no ‘cooling off' period for politicians who take up work in industries they had oversight of as Ministers in Cabinet.
"No wonder Australians look at their politicians with such disdain. A former Gillard government Climate Change Minister is now being paid to spruik coal seam gas mining.
"The Greens are calling for the lobbyist code of conduct to be strengthened and legislated to make it harder for newly elected governments to leave the door open for their ministers to quickly take up jobs with industry," Senator Rhiannon said.
