Feral minister should come a "croccer" over safari hunting

Media Release
Lee Rhiannon 25 Jun 2015

It is Country Liberal Party Senator Nigel Scullion, with his safari hunting plan for the Northern Territory, who is running feral not the crocodiles, Greens animal welfare spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said.

"Minister Scullion should be pulled into line by the Environment Minister Greg Hunt who rejected safari crocodile hunting in the Northern Territory last year," Senator Rhiannon said.

"What Mr Scullion is touting is not about ‘science'. Having amateurs shoot wild animals is not an evidence based approach to wildlife management.

"Protecting people from crocodile attacks and respecting Indigenous rights are essential to all government activities. But the Minister is using these points to try and justify his out dated hunting plan.

"Amateur hunting is cruel. Some animals will be wounded and will die a lingering death.

"The Minister might think his hunting plan will attract some rich tourists to the NT. But turning the Territory into the gun frontier of Australia will not be a good look for the top end," Senator Rhiannon said.
