Following today’s report from 350.org that fossil fuel companies receive about $2000 in subsidies for every dollar donated by the sector to political parties, the Greens plan to step up their campaign to win support for their Bill to ban political donations from mining companies.
The Greens do not accept donations from fossil fuel companies.
“The corrupting influence of political donations that the Liberal, National and Labor parties receive from the fossil fuel sector will only stop when these donations are banned,” Greens democracy spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said.
“We don’t know if any deals are done behind closed doors when it comes to donations but we do know that the fossil fuel sector receives multi-million dollar subsidises annually.
“For every dollar donated by the fossil fuel sector in 2013-15 to political parties these companies will receive about $2000 in subsidies for their industry in 2016-17.
“The 350.org report strengthens the case for a ban on political donations from the fossil fuel section.
“I warmly congratulate 350.org for the ‘Pollution Free Politics’ pledge initiative.
“The Greens campaign to win support for our Bill to ban political donations from the mining sector will be cranked up in light of these latest figures.
“The Greens Donations Reform Bill is currently before the Senate.
"This bill deserves support from all sides of politics as it would help restore public confidence in the work of governments, ministers and individual MPs," Senator Rhiannon said.
