Greens NSW Senator and transport spokesperson Lee Rhiannon says Coles, which has recently reported a 14% jump in half-year earnings, should respond to concerns of its truck drivers and the TWU about increased pressures which are risking public safety and driving down wages and conditions.
Truckies are protesting in Sydney as part of a National Day of Action against Coles.
"Coles boasts its "prices are 'Down Down'" but this is coming at the expense of safe roads and decent salaries and conditions for its truck drivers," Senator Rhiannon said.
"The mega retailers' thirst for a high profit margin is coming at the expense not only of a fair price for farmers' produce but also a fair deal for truck drivers.
"Deaths and injuries resulting from collisions involving over-worked and underpaid drivers is an additional casualty of road transport that no one needs," Senator Rhiannon said.
