Cloud over Labour’s $200,000 donation – call for AEC action
Responding to reports of a secret $200,000 donation to Labor on the eve of the federal election, Greens democracy spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon has called on the Australian Electoral Commission to investigate and prosecute if the law has been broken.
“Accepting $200,000 from a Taiwanese developer just days before the last election needs to be urgently investigated by the AEC,” Senator Rhiannon said.
“Labor should move quickly to clear up the murkiness surrounding this donation.
“There are a lot of unanswered questions around the receipt and expenditure of this $200,000 donation.
“If there is evidence that a candidate has failed to abide by the AEC election donation disclosure rules, with a donation of this magnitude, there should be a prosecution.
“This is another example of why foreign and corporate donations should be banned and electoral funding laws made consistent across the country,” Senator Rhiannon said
