Call to the University of Sydney: end witch hunt against Associate Professor Jake Lynch

Lee Rhiannon 29 Apr 2015

Australian Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon has called on the University of Sydney's Vice-Chancellor to end his threat of disciplinary action against Associate Professor Jake Lynch.

Senator Rhiannon today joined students, academics and unions to protest against the University of Sydney's attempts to suppress peaceful dissent and their threat to take disciplinary action against Associate Professor Lynch.

"Associate Professor Lynch did nothing more than verbally defend the right to peacefully protest at a talk last month given by Colonel Richard Kemp.

"Peaceful protests are an important part of a democratic society. The students protesting Mr Kemp's talk were exercising their democratic right.

"This witch hunt by University of Sydney's senior management is clearly linked to Associate Professor Lynch's public stand against the Israeli government's crimes towards the people of Palestine.

"Both University of Sydney staff members and students who raise awareness of the Israeli government's brutality and the illegal occupation of Palestinian land should be congratulated for their work for a just peace in the Middle East," Senator Rhiannon said.

Senator Rhiannon has signed an open letter along with Professor Noam Chomsky and Archbishop Desmond Tutu calling on Vice-Chancellor Michael Spence to not take disciplinary action against Associate Professor Lynch:
