5000 Australians to Muir and Madigan: Don’t vote for higher university fees

Media Release
Lee Rhiannon 16 Jan 2015

5000 Australian students, future students and their allies have joined the ‘1 Million Reasons’ campaign to send key crossbench Senators a postcard asking them to vote down the Abbott government’s higher education cuts.

Launched on Tuesday, ‘1 Million Reasons’ will customise, print and post a postcard for six of the key crossbench Senators for each sign up: http://www.millionreasons.com.au/.

The ‘1 Million Reasons’ Facebook page has more likes than Mr Pyne’s highered.gov.au FB page which spins his reforms as positive that provide increased opportunity.

Greens higher education spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said:

“The support for ‘1 Million Reasons’ which has spent $0 in advertising, stands in direct contrast with the Abbott government’s $8 million spend on their deceiving ads about how great their reforms are.

“The overwhelming support for the campaign in such a short amount of time, shows that Australians have not tired of taking on the Abbott government’s plans to increase student debt and slash university funding.

“We will be ramping up this campaign in the coming weeks, with university groups participating in it as part of their preparations for O-week.
