NSW government under pressure to back off Millers Point and Sirius eviction plans

A group of prominent Sydney residents are calling on the NSW Liberal-National government to drop their eviction plans for the remaining Millers Point residents.

The situation is at a critical stage with the NSW Family and Community Services (FACS) refusing to accept the recommendations of the Housing Appeals Committee, which means evictions could start any day.

Responding to claims that the last 24 tenants are being made final “formal offers” which if they do not accept will result in eviction, Australian Greens spokesperson for Housing, Senator Rhiannon said:

A useless housing budget

The number of people who are homeless and the number struggling to buy their first home will increase under the Liberal-National budget, Greens housing spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said. 
 
“The Turnbull government has only offered superficial solutions to the housing crisis. There are fourteen supposed housing affordability measures in this budget, but none of them will do much to make housing more affordable. 
 
“Any housing plan that does not reform negative gearing and the capital gains discount is a sham.

One of the biggest failures of the Turnbull government is shaping up to be their inability to ensure all Australians have access to secure affordable housing, Greens housing spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said in response to reports that the National Affordable Housing Agreement (NAHA) will be scrapped in the May Budget.

“Winding up the $9 billion National Affordable Housing Agreement will push more people into homelessness and lock people out of secure housing,” Senator Rhiannon said.

Productivity Comm report backs a loser in promoting social housing privatisation

Greens spokesperson for housing Senator Lee Rhiannon has rejected the Productivity Commission’s privatisation plan for social housing as it would be a recipe for hardship and increased inequality. 

The PC plan is set out in their report “Introduction Competition and Informed User Choice into Human Services”.

“Introducing more competition and contestability did not work for vocational education and training and it will not work for social housing,” Senator Rhiannon said.

The Greens strongly support the day of action to retain public housing and public land in Sydney.

“The Greens want to introduce affordable housing supply bonds to urgently boost the supply of community and public housing,” Greens spokesperson for housing Senator Lee Rhiannon said.

“The attack on public and community housing happens at a state and federal level – the federal government has abandoned funding, and state governments including the Baird government are happy to sell off public housing and public land.
