Greens warn - cashless welfare card trial impact on Bankstown

People living below the poverty line in Bankstown would suffer further hardship if the planned trial of a cashless welfare card resulted in its widespread introduction, Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon said.

Legislation to introduce trials for a cashless welfare card passed the Senate on the combined vote of Liberal, National and Labor parties. The trial will be held in Ceduna in South Australia.

Lee speaks against cuts to student support

Senator RHIANNON (New South Wales) (17:10): The higher education package that the government has put before us is very troubling because what it would do to Australia in the long term is extremely serious. It would rip billions of dollars of funding from our public universities, it would put enormous hardship on our students and their families and it would really change the make-up of the types of people who would have the opportunity to gain an education.

Motion: International Development and Disability

Senator RHIANNON (New South Wales) (15:44): I move:

That the Senate—

(a) notes that:

(i) 80 per cent of people with a disability live in developing countries,

(ii) over 20 per cent of the world's poorest people in developing countries have a disability,

(iii) children with a disability are much less likely to attend school than children without a disability, and

(iv) it is estimated that armed conflict will be the eighth most common cause of disability worldwide by 2020; and

Senator RHIANNON (New South Wales) (19:19): These three Stronger Futures bills will undermine the human rights of Indigenous communities. It really does defy understanding why they have been brought forward in this form. Anything that is positive in the package will be rendered meaningless because they are so deeply discriminatory.
