They are separated by thousands of kilometres, but both highlight the problems of a one-sided view of the economy-that is, that mining and power production take precedence over all else. Time and again, we see large companies that propose dangerous projects claim they will benefit the local community, but, meanwhile, they walk all over those communities. These companies often ignore local industries as their activities damage the diversity of local economies and the local environment.

(a) recognises that:

(i) the Royal National Park in New South Wales is Australia's first national park, one of the world's oldest public parks, and the first to be proclaimed as a 'national park', and

(ii) the Royal National Park is home to outstanding universal environmental, cultural and social values;

States’ track record on forests shows RFAs must be scrapped and national environment protection crucial

The Australian Greens welcome the Environmental Defenders Offices’ report out today that shows state governments have grossly failed to protect native forests, that the federal government must scrap Regional Forest Agreements, and that Tony Abbott’s plan to put states in control of more environmental matters would be disastrous.

“Regional Forest Agreements have led to gross mismanagement of the nation’s forests, causing a biodiversity crisis in many unique ecosystems,” Senator Lee Rhiannon, Australian Greens forests spokesperson, said.

Our first national park – campaign for world heritage listing

I love Royal National Park so this campaign for world heritage listing for these very special places means a lot to me.

Sutherland Shire Environment Centre is spearheading the First National Park campaign. I strongly recommend their book “A Natural for world heritage” by Dr Geoff Mosley. Geoff, a geographer and environmental historian, has produced a stunning publication.
